In reflecting on our time in China, I have enjoyed remembering some of the unique things we encountered there...
*Napkins at restaurants are a luxury....we even had to pay for them at a Thai restaurant...we didn't know this until we got our bill and figured it out....
*They don't use ice in drinks...which I dearly missed...there is nothing better than a Route 44 from Sonic w/their special ice...ahhhh....
*Many children wear split-pants...these are crotchless pants, for potty-training purposes. We have watched "Shark Tank" before and are always dreaming about that "IT" idea...maybe split-pants will be the next big 'thing' here in the USA!
And on a related note..when the child needs to go, when wearing split-pants...they just tinkle...wherever, whenever.
We also heard sometimes they are trained to tinkle at the sound of a certain whistle from their caretaker.....
*Eating out is interesting in itself....they do not bring all the food, for the whole party, out at the same time...they just bring the dishes when they are ready...on two different occasions, Meredith got her food last, and we were all finished eating.
Also, you have to ask for your bill. They consider it rude to bring the ticket to the customer, before it is requested.
*Some elderly Chinese who do not have an inheritance for their families, will step out in front of a car or bus, essentially committing suicide...because if a motorist hits and kills a Chinese national, their family gets tens of thousands of dollars....this was told to us by an American businessman who lives there...he quit driving and hired a driver for this very reason...it was too risky.
*Taxi drivers do not expect tips.
*You have to pay for plastic bags at Carrefour--their Wal-Mart equivalent....and if you do not specify this ahead of time, the little check-out girl gets really nasty with you.
*They rarely use soap when they wash their hands.
*Slurping and sucking your food off your chopsticks or spoon is completely normal.
*They do not wait in lines.....it's every man for himself...with 20% of the world living in one place, I guess that's how it happens.
*Apparently spitting everywhere is common...because we saw many, many signs telling people not to spit.
*Being tan is not cool....everyone uses an umbrella, all the time...and esp. if it's NOT raining...to keep the sun off their skin...to be very fair, is to be beautiful.
*Exposed electrical wires, hanging very close to large puddles of water, and uncovered manholes...completely normal.
*Eating cat is 'out'...eating dog, still 'in'.
and there's more...but I'm tired.....
wow....those are some really interesting things about China. glad you're home safely.
